Potentialism Framework

Compass, not clearance

Making ethical judgment more legible, contestable, and revisable.

Potentialism Framework v2.0 is a practical ethical compass for contexts shaped by power, uncertainty, social systems, and AI — where good intentions are not enough.

Boundary note

PF v2.0 is a proposed framework with practice scaffolds. It is not a certification scheme, not a moral score, not a compliance standard, and not a substitute for domain evidence, governance, or technical assurance.

PF can support ethical reasoning. It does not grant moral clearance.

What is PF?

PF is a compass for ethical judgment under complexity.

PF helps people examine what is being expressed, in what context, who is affected, and how responsibility changes when awareness and power increase.

It does not try to replace judgment with rules. It makes judgment easier to inspect, challenge, document, and revise.

Legible

PF helps make assumptions, affected parties, constraints, risks, and tradeoffs visible enough to review.

Contestable

PF treats disagreement, critique, uncertainty, and dissent as part of ethical reasoning, not as noise to remove.

Revisable

PF supports decisions that can be updated when outcomes, harms, blind spots, or responsibility gaps become clearer.

Why it matters?

Ethical decisions often hide behind intention, procedure, power, or complexity.

In real situations, harm is often not caused by a single bad intention. It can emerge from incentives, role pressure, system design, institutional habits, unclear responsibility, or technical complexity.

PF gives a structured way to ask better questions before a decision becomes a justification story.

Good intentions are not enough

PF asks what actually happens in context, not only what someone meant to do.

Procedures can become cover

A checklist, policy, metric, or review process can make a decision look justified while important harms remain hidden.

Power changes responsibility

The more awareness, authority, reach, or impact someone has, the stronger the burden becomes to reason carefully and answer for effects.

How PF helps?

Use PF to improve judgment, not to replace it.

Name the situation

What is being decided, expressed, designed, deployed, paused, escalated, or normalized?

Map affected parties

Who bears the costs, who has voice, who has exit, and who can still change the outcome?

Check compatibility

Look across avoidable harm, dignity of awareness, and others’ agency within real constraints.

Keep a trace

Record uncertainty, dissent, tradeoffs, safeguards, revisit triggers, and repair paths.

Who is this for?

PF may be useful for people working where judgment, power, uncertainty, and responsibility meet.

Potentialism Framework v2.0 is not limited to one discipline. It can support shared reasoning in contexts where decisions, systems, relationships, or institutions shape what becomes possible for others.

AI governance & safety reviewers

Use PF to examine deployment context, contestability, responsibility mapping, safeguards, handoff points, and the limits of treating technical assurance as ethical clearance.

Researchers & ethicists

Use PF to make assumptions, uncertainty, affected parties, claim-basis, tradeoffs, and revision conditions easier to inspect and challenge.

Organizational decision-makers

Use PF to document reasoning, surface dissent, avoid responsibility drift, and keep decisions revisable when incentives or institutional pressure shape outcomes.

Educators & facilitators

Use PF to support structured discussion, case reflection, disagreement, ethical literacy, and revision without forcing premature consensus.

Care, therapy & coaching contexts

Use PF to distinguish capacities from expressions, attend to context and vulnerability, and reason carefully about agency, dignity, harm, and responsibility.

Conflict, power & responsibility work

Use PF when conflicts involve uneven power, moral remainder, repair, constrained agency, contested responsibility, or the risk that harm becomes justified by procedure.
